Scored for two altos and tenor this piece presents a challenge for the advancing saxophonist. The first miniature, Ballade à trios, has a lyrical melody which moves between all parts allowing the ensemble to work on matching each other’s phrasing and tone. The second miniature, Sax, Riffs and Soul, is immediately engaging with a funk riff and rhythmic groove. The opening syncopated section is contrasted with a more soulful middle section in which players keep time using finger clicks before the return of the opening theme. This piece is lot of fun to play and would be perfect for an up-and-coming grade six-plus school trio or the more aspiring amateur group looking for something original and memorable.
