Description
“Bach & Beyond” was written as a jazzy, slightly tongue-in cheek tribute for the 250th anniversary of Bach’s death (spot the quotes from seven of Bach’s most celebrated works).
Originally for piano, this version was written in 2002. It was recorded by the Paragon Saxophone Quartet in 2003 as the title track on the “Bach & Beyond” album.
The E-Edition PDF bundle comes with the following parts:
Soprano Saxophone
Alto Saxophone
Tenor Saxophone
Baritone Saxophone
“Bach & Beyond” is also available in hard-copy from June Emerson Wind Music.

This scaled down version of a larger piece works well. Although it doesn’t have the sheer power of the six sax original in the opening and final sections it does benefit from a greater sense of clarity. The line often gets lost in the six sax version mainly because it’s hard to find a six sax players of similar abilities. I have yet to come across a professional saxophone sextet but who knows – it would certainly at present be a short gig. Also an established quartet will already have a tight ensemble feel as well as a better balance than a group of six put together for the occasion.
