ZERK

A few words from the composer, Xander Hunfeld:

“The composition ZERK makes use of variating textures and economic constraints of musical means, by balanced distribution of several modes from Messiaen. With this technique the composer comments on minimal music.

In 1994 ZERK was commissioned by the Musica Nova Consort as part of the Carrousel Project, supported by the |Gaudeamus Foundation.

I used this assignment to reflect on tragedy in my family, firstly through poetry. Later these poems were deepened through music.

My family lost contact with my eldest brother because of a stroke in 1988, and two other brothers suddenly died of cardiac arrests in 1993. Afterwards, my mother never really came to terms with her sorrow. She passed away in 1996. We still do miss her badly.”
