Description

New Cross Counterpoint is written for live Bb clarinet, six pre-recorded Bb clarinets and two bass clarinets. While inspired by Steve Reich’s New York Counterpoint, New Cross Counterpoint has its own distinguished voice of exciting melodic lines and rich harmonic structure of multi-layered clarinets written in three contrasting movements. The listener is given a tour of the frenetic energy of New Cross, South East London, where the composer lived for several years. It was originally commissioned by Caterina Dellabona in 2017 and re-worked for Victoria Samek in 2022.

The world premiere recording by Victoria Samek (Orfeo Calms the Furies, CC0079) is available from Friday 10th October 2025 on Clarinet & Saxophone Classics, and on iTunes and all major streaming platforms from Saturday 1st November 2025.
