A few words from Marilyn Strevens:
“I discovered this piece of music for the cello, Lyrica No. 5, a series of lyrical pieces for the cello encompassing classical, romantic and modern composers, selected for use at the Royal Conservatory of Music at Leipzig and also for concert use. These were arranged for cello by Julius Klengel and piano by Carl Reinecke. It is a virtuoso piece showing the versatility of the cello and in this arrangement, the Bass Clarinet. Unfortunately there is no reference from where the Andante came or the instrumentation.
Klengel’s father an amateur musician, gave Julius his first musical instruction. Once it became clear he enjoyed the cello, he was enrolled as a pupil of Emil Hegar, principal cellist of the Leipzig Gewandhaus Orchestra. Klengel became a member of that orchestra at the age of 15, and principal cellist at 22. In the same year, 1881, he was appointed “Royal Professor” of cello at the Leipzig Conservatory.
Carl Reinecke, was a German pianist, composer, conductor and teacher. He did all his studying with his father, a teacher and writer on musical subjects. Reinecke made several concert tours. He taught counterpoint and piano at the Cologne Conservatory and was music director first at Barmen then at Breslau University He held the important posts of conductor of Leipzig’s Gewandhaus Orchestra and teacher of piano and composition at the Leipzig Conservatory from 1860.”
The E-Edition PDF bundle comes with a Bb bass clarinet (also playable on Bb clarinet) part and piano accompaniment.
