Great foot-tapping stuff this, with its infectious reggae groove and driving funk bass lines! Not too difficult either – though some of the jazz rhythms need a close look – with a flexible line-up that caters for the current alto epidemic (and baritone dearth!) A real winner with younger players, making it ideal for schools and courses. Alto 2 has a solo section which can be read or improvised to give the piece an extra dimension.

Simple or What!? By Chris Gumbley is for saxophone ensemble [6 parts]. It is good to see some flexibility here in the instrumentation, making this piece accessible to a wider range of groups, for example in schools where there isn’t always a baritone or soprano instrument. This is written in a lively reggae style and there is an opportunity for the 2nd alto player to practise improvising skills. It is well written and appealing. About grades 3-5.
