Mark studied the piano with Allan Schiller and composition with Robert Saxton at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama. After gaining his AGSM Diploma, he was awarded a scholarship to study on the Post-Diploma Accompaniment course during which time he won the School Composition Prize and the Jenny Hyman Prize for outstanding chamber music playing.
Mark is now a Professor of piano at the Junior Guildhall and also teaches at St. Edmund's College, Ware, and The Perse School, Cambridge. Many of his students have gained successes in exams, auditions for entry to music colleges and competitions, notably Erdem Misirlioglu who reached the grand final of BBC Young Musician of the Year 2008 and also gained 3rd place in the Rachmaninoff Competition in Russia, and George Harliono-Evans (age 10), who came 2nd in the Segovia piano competition in November 2010. Mark is also a regular examiner at Leeds College of Music.
As a performer, Mark has played in most European countries as well as the US, Brazil, Mexico and Singapore. Performances in London have included several appearances in the Purcell Room and St. Martin-in-the-Fields. He has also made many broadcasts including Radio 3 and Classic FM as well as making several CD recordings, notably the complete works of Szymanowski for violin and piano. Mark has mainly specialised in chamber music and has been a member of the Mühlfeld Trio, Camerada and 'The Ensemble of Madrid'. He has also been a guest on music courses such as Dartington International Summer School since 1991 and the Mozarteum Summer Academy working with Ruggiero Ricci. He had a particular interest playing for cello and developed this interest by playing many recitals with his sister Hilary. This interest progressed into working as an accompanist for master-classes and lessons with William Pleeth, Steven Isserlis, Maurice Gendron, Ralph Kirshbaum and Karine Georgian.
Mark has always had an interest in composing, and often writes pieces for his students' recitals or competitions. He began writing music as early as 10 years old, and started writing more seriously during his student years under Robert Saxton. Since then he has been commissioned to compose arrangements, and has a large portfolio of chamber works ranging from solo piano to trios and quintets. His series 'Allstyles' is on sale at musicroom.com, Chimes music stores and on his website, allstylesmusic.com. His first book is a collection of 12 pieces for grade 1-5 level. The second book is called Essential exercises for piano and includes a fun accompaniment to play along with. The 3rd book for Saxophone and piano is his latest in the series.
