Carlos is a saxophonist, composer and educator based in London. He has taught at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama since 2007, where he is Professor of Jazz Studies and Saxophone, and Programme Leader for the BA in Performance and Creative Enterprise. He has led workshops across the UK and abroad, as a visiting tutor at other music colleges and universities, and taught saxophone at the Purcell School for 12 years. In July 2012 he gave a lecture presentation to the World Saxophone Congress on articulation within jazz saxophone.
As a performer and composer, Carlos has been a quiet force at the cutting edge of the UK jazz scene for some years. He leads the band Mandorla, which released its eponymous debut album on the F-IRE Collective label in 2009 and a subsequent live album on the E17Jazz label. He has recorded as a sideman on numerous contemporary jazz albums, such as Justin Quinn's award-winning Before I Forget. He has collaborated with Zoe Rahman, Gary Husband and the Nicolas Meier Group, held the sax chair in John Mayer's classic band Indo-Jazz Fusions, and featured with salsa greats Roberto Pla, Machito Jnr and Tito Rodriguez Jnr.
Aside from composing instrumental music (published by Saxtet and Spartan Press) he is currently also working on an extensive book about learning to improvise through the study of transcription. He has also contributed academic book chapters, including to Developing Creativities in Higher Music Education and Musicians in the Making: Pathways to Creative Performance (Oxford University Press). He has curated several club venues and founded the E17Jazz Collective in 2007, who were winners of the 2012 Waltham Forest Arts and Culture award.
