Chris Gumbley

Chris received his formal musical education at Huddersfield School of Music where he studied composition with Richard Steinitz. After graduating, he taught saxophone and clarinet at Stoke-on-Trent College and Newcastle-under-Lyme School before taking up the post of saxophone tutor at Birmingham Conservatoire. He is an Associated Board examiner.

Recently Chris has turned towards composition producing a wide range of educational wind music for saxophone, clarinet and flute including solo studies, duets, solo works with piano, saxophone quartets and quintets. His work is published by Saxtet Publications, Spartan Press, Brasswind and Boosey & Hawkes with much of it appearing on national exam syllabii.

In addition to this composing career, Chris was a member of Saxtet between 1993-1998 and is now in regular demand as a freelance player. The Pasadena Roof Orchestra, Charleston Chasers Temptations and Four Tops have all used his services recently.

He is well known on the local jazz scene and runs Gumbles Jazz Club in Stafford.
